What is hospitality

A few years ago, during one trip home to NJ something unexpected happened. The day we flew into town, after picking up a rental car and pulling into traffic, I saw was a bumper sticker that read: “Welcome to NJ…Now Go Home!” As a lover of my home state, this was not exactly the warm and cheery welcome to I would want others to experience.

It made me wonder, how many occasions in our lives when we send similar signals to people around us. Whether we are at our place of worship, in our neighborhood, or at social gatherings, are there times when we fail to make others feel welcome in our space?

Paul in his letter to the Romans shared instruction to his readers to be “given to hospitality.” Later in the book of Hebrews we see, “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels”.

By showing gracious kindness to those who come our way, we echo the God’s invitation for salvation, which declares, “Let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely” Rev. 22:17.

To show someone loving hospitality just might be the first step in showing that person the way to heaven.

Let me know how you may have missed an opportunity to share your hospitality. Your blessing could touch another. Plus, I will write you back.

See you next Sunday,

MJ
